For a richer flavor, sear the beef in a skillet before adding it to the slow cooker. Adjust the amount of red wine to your preference. A dry red wine like Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot works best. If you prefer a thicker stew, mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water and stir it into the stew during the last 30 minutes of cooking. Remove the bay leaves before serving.
