For a richer flavor, brown the ground beef in a mixture of olive oil and butter. Add a finely chopped carrot, celery stalk, and small onion (soffritto) to the skillet with the beef for a more authentic Bolognese flavor. A bay leaf added during simmering will enhance the depth of flavor. Remember to remove it before serving. If the sauce becomes too thick during simmering, add a little water or beef broth to thin it out. This sauce can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or frozen for up to 3 months. Serve over your favorite pasta (such as spaghetti, linguine, or rigatoni) with a generous sprinkling of grated Parmesan cheese.
