Follow The Directions

01

Step
0 mins

Preheat oven to 500 degrees F (260 degrees C).

02

Step
10 mins

In a large bowl, combine soft bread crumbs, dry bread crumbs, and milk. Allow to soak until the bread crumbs have absorbed most of the milk (approximately 10 minutes). Add ground beef, Italian sausage, 1 cup of marinara sauce, eggs, garlic, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes. Mix until thoroughly combined. Form into 16 large meatballs.

03

Step
20 mins

Heat 1 cup of olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Cook the meatballs until browned on all sides (approximately 10 minutes). Transfer to a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven until no longer pink in the center (approximately 10 minutes).

04

Step
5 mins

In a large saucepan, bring 1 cup of marinara sauce to a simmer over medium heat. Add the cooked meatballs and heat through (approximately 5 minutes).

05

Step
16 mins

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onion, red bell pepper, and serrano pepper. Cook and stir until the onion softens (5 to 6 minutes). Add the Marsala wine, salt, and black pepper. Cook until the wine has evaporated and the onion turns golden (approximately 10 minutes).

06

Step
0 mins

Spread each hoagie bun with 1/4 cup of mascarpone cheese and 1 tablespoon of garlic basil spread. Place four meatballs and a generous spoonful of marinara sauce on each bun. Sprinkle each sandwich with 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese.

07

Step
5 mins

Place the sandwiches onto a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven until the cheese is melted and the buns are toasted to perfection (approximately 5 minutes). Top each sandwich with 1/4 of the onion mixture. Garnish each sandwich with 2 tablespoons of fresh basil and 2 tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. Serve immediately and savor!

For an extra layer of flavor, consider using a homemade marinara sauce. The depth of flavor will truly elevate the dish.
If you prefer a milder spice level, reduce or omit the red pepper flakes and serrano pepper.
For best results, use high-quality Italian sausage. The flavor of the sausage is crucial to the overall taste of the grinder.
Feel free to experiment with different cheeses! Provolone or a blend of Italian cheeses would also be delicious.
