Follow The Directions

01

Step
23 mins

In a Dutch oven or large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter with 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced yellow onions, season with 1 teaspoon of salt and 0.5 teaspoon of ground black pepper. Cook, stirring constantly, for about 3 minutes until the onions begin to soften. Cover the pot with a lid, reduce the heat to low, and allow the onions to caramelize, stirring occasionally to prevent burning, for approximately 20 minutes.

02

Step
5 mins

While the onions are caramelizing, prepare the beef patties. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 pound of ground beef, 1 teaspoon of garlic salt, and 0.25 teaspoon of black pepper. Mix thoroughly until just combined. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a rectangular patty.

03

Step
8 mins

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties, flipping once, for 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. During the last minute of cooking, add a slice of Swiss cheese to each patty. Top each cheeseburger patty with an equal amount of the caramelized onions.

04

Step
1 mins

Set an oven rack about 6 inches from the heat source and preheat the oven's broiler.

05

Step
2 mins

Spread 1 teaspoon of butter over each slice of rye bread. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and broil until lightly golden and toasted. Assemble the patty melts by placing the cheeseburger and onion mixture between two slices of toasted rye bread. Serve immediately and enjoy the symphony of flavors!

For a richer flavor, consider using a combination of Gruyere and Swiss cheese.
If you don't have a Dutch oven, a large, heavy-bottomed skillet will work just fine.
For an extra layer of flavor, try adding a smear of Dijon mustard to the toasted rye bread before assembling the patty melts.
To keep the patty melts warm while you're toasting the bread, you can place them in a preheated oven at a low temperature (around 200°F/95°C).
