Follow The Directions

01

Step
5 mins

Preheat oven to 325°F (165°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. (5 minutes)

02

Step
25 mins

Spread bread cubes in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven until lightly toasted and crisp, about 20 minutes. This step prevents the bread from becoming soggy. (25 minutes)

03

Step
12 mins

While the bread is toasting, melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add apple slices and sauté until tender and slightly caramelized, about 7 minutes. Transfer the sautéed apples to the prepared baking dish, followed by the toasted bread cubes. Toss gently to combine. (12 minutes)

04

Step
5 mins

In a large bowl, whisk together brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, egg yolks, milk, heavy cream and vanilla extract. (5 minutes)

05

Step
1 hrs

Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread and apple mixture in the baking dish. Gently press down on the bread to ensure it is submerged in the custard. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and let stand at room temperature for at least 45 minutes, or up to 1 hour, to allow the bread to absorb the custard. (60 minutes)

06

Step
50 mins

Remove the plastic wrap. Bake in the preheated oven until the pudding is set and golden brown, about 50 minutes. A knife inserted into the center should come out mostly clean. (50 minutes)

07

Step

Let the bread pudding cool slightly before serving. Sprinkle with additional brown sugar, if desired, before serving.

For a deeper caramel flavor, use dark brown sugar.
Add a splash of bourbon or rum to the custard mixture for an adult twist.
To prevent the top from browning too quickly, tent the baking dish with foil during the last 15 minutes of baking.
Serve warm with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
