For an extra layer of richness, consider adding a tablespoon of tomato paste along with the diced tomatoes. Fresh basil can be substituted for dried basil; use about 1 tablespoon of chopped fresh basil and add it towards the end of cooking. A pinch of red pepper flakes can add a subtle kick to the sauce.
