For a deeper flavor, sear the beef cubes in a hot pan before adding them to the slow cooker. Adjust the amount of paprika to your liking. Smoked paprika can also be used for a different flavor profile. If you don't have spaetzle, egg noodles or mashed potatoes make great substitutes. The goulash can be made a day ahead and reheated, allowing the flavors to meld even further.
