For an enhanced vanilla flavor, use vanilla-infused sugar, which you can make by storing a vanilla bean in a jar of sugar for a week or two.
If you don't have self-rising flour, you can make your own by combining 1 cup of all-purpose flour with 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
Feel free to experiment with different frostings. A simple glaze of powdered sugar and milk also works wonderfully.
Ensure your carbonated water is cold for a lighter, fluffier cake.
