Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal. (5 minutes)

02

Step

In a food processor, combine the flour, 1 cup cold butter, ¾ cup granulated sugar, egg, baking powder, and ½ teaspoon salt. Pulse until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs and holds together when pinched. (10 minutes)

03

Step

Press ¾ of the dough evenly into the prepared pan to form the crust. (5 minutes)

04

Step

In a large skillet, melt 3 tablespoons butter over medium heat. Add the diced apples, brown sugar, ½ cup granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are softened and slightly caramelized, about 8-10 minutes. (15 minutes)

05

Step

Stir in the cornstarch, mixing until the filling thickens. If the mixture seems too runny, add a little more cornstarch. (2 minutes)

06

Step

Pour the caramel-apple mixture over the crust, spreading evenly. Crumble the remaining dough over the top of the apple filling. (5 minutes)

07

Step

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. (40 minutes)

08

Step

Let the bars cool completely in the pan before lifting them out using the parchment paper overhang. Cut into bars and drizzle with caramel sauce, if desired. (60 minutes)

For best results, use cold butter when making the crust. This will create a flakier, more tender crust.
Feel free to experiment with different types of apples. Honeycrisp or Gala apples would also work well in this recipe.
If you don't have a food processor, you can cut the butter into the flour using a pastry blender or your fingers.
Store leftover bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Next time, I might try adding some chopped pecans or walnuts to the crumble topping for extra crunch.
