Follow The Directions

01

Step
5 mins

In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs and granulated sugar until light and frothy. (5 minutes)

02

Step
2 mins

Stir in the sour cream, vanilla extract, and rum (or brandy) until well combined. (2 minutes)

03

Step
3 mins

Gradually fold in the flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms. (3 minutes)

04

Step
7 mins

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. (7 minutes)

05

Step
1 mins

Divide the dough in half, keeping one half covered while working with the other. (1 minute)

06

Step
5 mins

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough as thinly as possible – almost paper-thin. (5 minutes)

07

Step
5 mins

Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough into 2-inch wide strips, then cut the strips diagonally every 4 inches to create diamond shapes. (5 minutes)

08

Step
10 mins

Make a 1-inch slit in the middle of each diamond. Take one corner of the diamond and pull it through the slit to create the signature bowtie shape. (10 minutes)

09

Step
10 mins

Heat the vegetable oil in a large, deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C). A thermometer is highly recommended for maintaining the correct temperature. (10 minutes)

10

Step
2 mins

Carefully slide 7-8 bowties into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. They should puff up almost immediately. (2 minutes)

11

Step
4 mins

Fry for 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove the bowties from the oil and transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to drain. (4 minutes)

12

Step
3 mins

While still warm, dust the cruschickies generously with confectioners' sugar. (3 minutes)

13

Step

Serve immediately and enjoy!

For a lighter texture, try using cake flour instead of all-purpose flour.
If the dough is too sticky to work with, add a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time.
Be careful not to overcrowd the pan when frying, as this will lower the oil temperature and result in greasy cruschickies.
For an extra touch of flavor, try adding a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the dough.
These are best enjoyed fresh, but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
