Follow The Directions

01

Step
10 mins

In a small saucepan, combine 1/2 cup water and wheat berries. Bring to a boil, then cover, remove from heat, and let sit for 10 minutes to allow the wheat berries to soak and soften.

02

Step
5 mins

Melt butter in a 2-quart saucepan over low heat. Add oats, pecans, and almonds and cook, stirring constantly, until golden brown and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Be careful not to burn the nuts.

03

Step
0 mins

Carefully pour 3 cups of boiling water into the saucepan with the nut mixture. Add the soaked wheat berries and chopped dried apples.

04

Step
20 mins

Cover the saucepan and cook over low heat, without stirring, until the wheat berries are tender, approximately 20 minutes.

05

Step
0 mins

Stir in sugar, cinnamon, and salt to taste. Adjust the sweetness and spice level to your liking.

For a creamier cereal, add a splash of milk or cream after cooking.
Feel free to substitute other dried fruits, such as cranberries or raisins.
To add more flavor, toast the nuts in a dry skillet before adding them to the butter.
This cereal can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop with a little extra water or milk.
