Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan. (5 minutes)

02

Step

In a large bowl, cream together the flour, brown sugar, 1 cup margarine, eggs, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, and baking soda until well combined. Stir in the rolled oats. (10 minutes)

03

Step

Press 2/3 of the oat mixture firmly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan. (5 minutes)

04

Step

In a medium saucepan, melt the butterscotch chips, chocolate chips, and 2 tablespoons margarine over medium heat, stirring frequently until smooth. (8 minutes)

05

Step

Remove from heat and stir in the sweetened condensed milk and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract until thoroughly combined and smooth. (3 minutes)

06

Step

Pour the melted chocolate mixture evenly over the pressed oat mixture in the baking pan. (2 minutes)

07

Step

Crumble the remaining oat mixture evenly over the top of the chocolate layer. (5 minutes)

08

Step

Bake in the preheated oven for 23-27 minutes, or until the top is lightly golden and the center is set. (25 minutes)

09

Step

Let cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes before cutting into squares. For cleaner cuts, refrigerate for an additional 30 minutes. (10 minutes)

For a richer flavor, use salted butter instead of margarine.
To prevent sticking, line the baking pan with parchment paper before pressing in the oat mixture.
Feel free to experiment with different types of chocolate chips or add chopped nuts to the butterscotch mixture.
Store these bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

I found that chilling the bars before cutting them made them much easier to handle.

I added chopped pecans to the oat mixture, and it gave them a nice crunch.
