Follow The Directions

01

Step

In a medium-sized saucepan, whisk together the ketchup, tomato sauce, bourbon, brown sugar, molasses, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, mustard powder, liquid smoke, and cayenne pepper. (5 minutes)

02

Step

Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly to prevent scorching. (8 minutes)

03

Step

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and simmer gently, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking and prevent sticking. (3 minutes)

04

Step

Continue simmering for approximately 45 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency and the flavors have melded together beautifully. The sauce should coat the back of a spoon. (45 minutes)

05

Step

Remove from heat and let cool slightly before using. The sauce will thicken further as it cools. (10 minutes)

For a smoother sauce, consider using a blender or immersion blender after simmering.
Adjust the amount of cayenne pepper to suit your preferred level of spiciness. Smoked paprika can also add depth.
The bourbon flavor will mellow during cooking, but for a non-alcoholic version, substitute with strong brewed coffee or apple juice.
Store leftover barbecue sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

This sauce is amazing! The bourbon adds such a unique flavor. I used it on pulled pork sliders and they were a hit!

I made this sauce for a BBQ and everyone raved about it. It's the perfect balance of sweet, smoky, and spicy.

Easy to make and tastes incredible. I reduced the cayenne pepper a bit because I'm not a huge fan of spice, and it was still delicious.

  • Chasity Schroeder

I've tried a lot of barbecue sauce recipes, and this is by far my favorite. It's so much better than store-bought.
