Follow The Directions

01

Step

In a large Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot, cook the bacon over medium-high heat until crisp, approximately 8-10 minutes. Turn the bacon occasionally to ensure even cooking.

02

Step

Remove the bacon from the pot and place it on paper towels to drain. Reserve the bacon drippings in the pot.

03

Step

Add the butter to the reserved bacon drippings in the pot and melt over medium heat.

04

Step

Add the sliced cabbage, diced onion, salt, pepper, and sugar to the pot. Stir well to combine with the melted butter and bacon drippings.

05

Step

Cover the pot tightly and cook, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage and onion are tender and slightly caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.

06

Step

While the cabbage is cooking, crumble the cooked bacon into bite-sized pieces.

07

Step

Once the cabbage is tender, stir in the crumbled bacon. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

For a vegetarian option, omit the bacon and use 2 additional tablespoons of butter or olive oil.
A splash of apple cider vinegar or balsamic vinegar can add a tangy depth of flavor to the dish.
Feel free to add other vegetables such as carrots or bell peppers for added color and nutrition.
This dish is best served immediately, but leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
