Follow The Directions

01

Step

In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium-low heat. Add the onion, carrot, celery, and garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened and lightly browned (approximately 8 minutes).

02

Step

Add the ground beef to the pan and break it apart with a spoon. Cook until the beef is browned (approximately 10 minutes).

03

Step

Pour in the red wine and bring to a boil. Cook until the wine is almost completely absorbed (10 to 15 minutes).

04

Step

Stir in the milk and nutmeg. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the milk is almost absorbed (approximately 10 minutes).

05

Step

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, sugar, and oregano. Bring to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Simmer uncovered for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

For a richer flavor, consider using a combination of ground beef and ground pork.
A bay leaf added during simmering can impart a subtle, aromatic complexity.
Adjust the sugar to balance the acidity of the tomatoes according to your preference.
Simmering for longer than 1 hour will further develop the flavors of the sauce.
