Follow The Directions

01

Step

Prepare the Onions: Trim the ends of the onions, halve them lengthwise, and peel. Thinly slice the halves vertically from top to bottom. (5 minutes)

02

Step

Caramelize the Onions: Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, tossing to coat. Cook, stirring frequently, until they soften, then reduce heat to medium-low. Continue cooking until the onions are deeply caramelized and browned, about 15-20 minutes, stirring frequently. Add a tablespoon of water if they start to stick.

03

Step

Cook the Pierogies: Meanwhile, in a separate large nonstick skillet, heat butter and 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Arrange the frozen pierogies in a single layer and cook for approximately 16 minutes, or according to the package directions, flipping halfway through to ensure they are golden brown and heated through. Season with salt and pepper to taste. (16 minutes)

04

Step

Assemble and Serve: Transfer the cooked pierogies to a serving platter. Dollop each pierogi with sour cream. Top with the caramelized onions and crumbled bacon. Sprinkle generously with Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley or chives. Serve immediately with lemon wedges on the side.

For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding a pinch of red pepper flakes to the caramelized onions.
If you prefer a vegetarian option, omit the bacon and add sautéed mushrooms to the onion mixture.
Ensure the skillet is hot before adding the pierogies to achieve a crispy exterior.
Garnish with fresh dill instead of parsley or chives for a unique twist.
