Follow The Directions

01

Step
2 mins

In the bread machine bowl, combine oats, molasses, butter, and salt. Pour boiling water over the mixture. (2 minutes)

02

Step
20 mins

Measure 1/4 teaspoon sugar into a small cup and set aside. Add the remaining sugar to the oat mixture and stir. Allow the mixture to cool to about 100 degrees F/38 degrees C. (20 minutes)

03

Step
5 mins

In the small cup with the reserved sugar, pour in warm water and add yeast. Let stand until foamy, about 5 minutes. (5 minutes)

04

Step
2 mins

Pour bread flour over the oat mixture in the bread machine. Pour the yeast mixture over the flour. (2 minutes)

05

Step
1 hrs

Select the 'Dough' setting on your bread machine and press start. Check your machine's manual to determine the kneading time, and add raisins to the dough 5 minutes before the kneading cycle finishes. Let the bread machine complete the full dough cycle. (1 hour)

06

Step
5 mins

Grease two standard loaf pans. (5 minutes)

07

Step
1 hrs

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently punch down the dough, but do not knead. Divide the dough into two equal portions and shape into loaves. Place each loaf in a prepared pan, cover with a damp towel, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size. (1 hour)

08

Step
10 mins

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). (10 minutes)

09

Step
20 mins

Bake in the preheated oven until the tops are golden brown and the bottoms of the loaves sound hollow when tapped, approximately 15 to 20 minutes. (20 minutes)

10

Step

Remove from pans and let cool on a wire rack before slicing.

For a richer flavor, try using dark molasses.
If you don't have a bread machine, you can knead the dough by hand or with a stand mixer until it is smooth and elastic. Increase the rising time slightly.
For a sweeter bread, add an additional 1/4 cup of sugar to the oat mixture.
To make this recipe vegan, substitute the butter with a plant-based butter alternative.

My bread machine doesn't have a dough setting, so I kneaded it by hand. It was a little more work, but still worth it!
