For a smokier flavor, consider using smoked paprika in place of some of the chili powder. If you don't have a ham bone, you can substitute with 2 cups of chicken or vegetable broth for added moisture and flavor. Serve over white rice or enjoy on its own. For a thicker gumbo, mash some of the black beans before adding them to the slow cooker.
