For an extra moist cake, brush the cooled layers with a simple syrup made from equal parts sugar and water that has been heated until the sugar dissolves. To prevent the cake layers from sticking, line the bottoms of the pans with parchment paper rounds before greasing and flouring. If you don't have self-rising flour, you can make your own by combining 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour with 3 3/4 teaspoons baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
