Follow The Directions

01

Step
42 mins

Heat vegetable oil in a Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat. Sauté onion, celery, bell pepper, and garlic until softened, approximately 5-7 minutes. Introduce the diced tomatoes with green chiles, tomato sauce, sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper, and bay leaves. Reduce heat to medium-low and allow the mixture to simmer, coaxing out the flavors until the vegetables are tender, about 30 minutes.

02

Step
1 mins

Place flour in a large resealable plastic bag. Season generously with salt and pepper. Add the shrimp to the bag, seal it tightly, and shake until each shrimp is lightly and evenly coated in the seasoned flour.

03

Step
10 mins

Stir in the tomato juice to the sauce in the Dutch oven. Reduce the heat to low and simmer gently until the juice has slightly reduced, around 5 minutes. Add the shrimp to the sauce and cook until they turn a delicate pink, about 5 minutes. Remove the Dutch oven from the heat, allowing the residual heat to continue cooking the shrimp until they are a vibrant pink and the meat is opaque, approximately 5 minutes more.

For an extra layer of depth, consider adding a splash of Worcestershire sauce or a dash of hot sauce to the sauce.
Serve over fluffy white rice or creamy grits to soak up all that delicious sauce.
Feel free to adjust the amount of green chiles to control the level of spiciness.
Fresh herbs, such as parsley or thyme, make a lovely garnish.
