Follow The Directions

01

Step

Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a rolling boil. Add the spaghetti and cook, stirring occasionally, until al dente, about 10 to 12 minutes.

02

Step

While the pasta is cooking, heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Season the shrimp generously with salt and pepper. Add the shrimp to the hot skillet and cook for just 30 seconds per side, until lightly pink. Remove the shrimp from the skillet and set aside on a plate.

03

Step

Add the finely chopped shallots to the skillet and sauté for 2 minutes, until softened. Add the crushed garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Pour in the chicken broth, lemon zest, and half of the fresh lemon juice (reserve the remaining juice). Simmer gently for 2 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

04

Step

Stir in the heavy cream and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Return the shrimp to the skillet and cook until heated through and perfectly pink, about 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in the chopped fresh basil.

05

Step

Drain the spaghetti, reserving 1/4 to 1/2 cup of the starchy pasta water. This water is liquid gold for creating a silky sauce.

06

Step

Add the drained spaghetti to the skillet with the shrimp and lemon cream sauce. Add the reserved pasta water gradually, as needed, tossing continuously to coat the pasta evenly. Add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a touch of heat. Season with additional salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.

For an extra burst of flavor, consider adding a tablespoon of grated Parmesan cheese to the sauce before adding the pasta.
If you prefer a richer sauce, use mascarpone cheese instead of heavy cream.
Don't overcook the shrimp! They should be just cooked through and still tender.
Freshly squeezed lemon juice is key to the bright, vibrant flavor of this dish. Avoid using bottled lemon juice.
Garnish with extra basil leaves and a sprinkle of red pepper flakes before serving.
