Follow The Directions

01

Step
5 mins

In a 1-gallon plastic zip-top bag, combine the thinly sliced onion, soy sauce, lime juice, lemon juice, orange juice, chopped cilantro, chili powder, crushed garlic, ground cumin, dried oregano, crushed coriander seeds, hot pepper sauce, finely chopped chipotle pepper, ground black pepper, and white sugar. (5 minutes)

02

Step
2 mins

Add the flank steak to the bag, seal it tightly, and massage the marinade into the meat. Ensure the steak is fully coated. (2 minutes)

03

Step
24 hrs

Marinate the steak in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours, turning and massaging the meat frequently to ensure even flavor penetration. For optimal results, marinate for at least 6 hours. (Marinade time: 6-24 hours)

04

Step
3 mins

When ready to cook, heat olive oil in a large frying pan over high heat until shimmering. (3 minutes)

05

Step
9 mins

Add the steak and marinade to the hot pan. Cook the steak for 4 to 5 minutes per side for medium-rare to medium doneness. Use an instant-read thermometer to check for an internal temperature of 130 to 140 degrees F (54 to 60 degrees C). (8-10 minutes)

06

Step
7 mins

Remove the steak from the pan and let it rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing against the grain. This will allow the juices to redistribute, resulting in a more tender and flavorful carne asada. (5-10 minutes)

For a deeper, smokier flavor, use smoked paprika in place of some of the chili powder.
If you don't have coriander seeds, you can substitute with ground coriander, but the flavor will be slightly different.
Adjust the amount of hot pepper sauce to your preferred level of spiciness.
Freezing the marinated steak is an excellent way to prepare for quick meals. Thaw completely before cooking.
Serve with warm tortillas, Mexican rice, refried beans, guacamole, and your favorite salsa for a complete and satisfying meal.
