For a festive look, use red and green candied cherries. If the dough is too sticky to work with, add a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time. These cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For a nut-free version, omit the walnuts. To add a hint of almond flavor, substitute 1/4 teaspoon of almond extract for part of the vanilla extract.
