Follow The Directions

01

Step

In a skillet, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Add the finely chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Pour in the water and tomato sauce, stirring to combine. Heat the mixture until it reaches a lukewarm temperature (around 110 degrees F/45 degrees C). (5 minutes)

02

Step

In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine 1 cup of flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Pour in the tomato sauce mixture. Mix on low speed for 2 minutes to form a loose, spongy dough. Add 1 egg and another 1 cup of flour. Beat on high speed for 2 minutes to develop the gluten. Stir in the remaining 2 cups of flour. Use the dough hook attachment to knead on medium speed until the dough is smooth and elastic, about 8-10 minutes. (14 minutes)

03

Step

Lightly coat the top of the dough with vegetable oil. Cover the mixer bowl with a clean cloth and let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 2 hours. (120 minutes)

04

Step

Punch down the risen dough to release the air. Cut the dough in half. Place one half on a lightly floured surface, keeping the other half covered to prevent drying. Roll the first piece of dough into a rectangle approximately 9x12 inches. Cut the rectangle into 12 squares, each about 3 inches on a side. (10 minutes)

05

Step

Grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper. Place about 2 teaspoons of shredded Cheddar cheese in the center of each square. Fold the squares into triangles, enclosing the cheese filling. Pinch the edges tightly to seal. Place the filled rolls on the prepared baking sheet, seam-side down. Repeat with the remaining dough to make about 24 rolls. Cover the rolls with a cloth and let them rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour. (70 minutes)

06

Step

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). (10 minutes)

07

Step

In a small bowl, whisk together 1 egg with 1 teaspoon of water to create an egg wash. (2 minutes)

08

Step

Brush each roll with the egg wash. Bake in the preheated oven until the tops are golden brown and the cheese has melted, about 15 minutes. Let cool slightly before serving. (15 minutes)

For a richer flavor, try using browned butter instead of regular melted butter.
If you don't have a stand mixer, you can knead the dough by hand on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
To make the rolls ahead of time, you can refrigerate the dough after the first rise for up to 24 hours. Bring the dough back to room temperature before shaping and baking.
Experiment with different types of cheese! Gruyere, Monterey Jack, or a blend of cheeses would also be delicious.

I was a bit skeptical about the tomato sauce, but it really works! The rolls were soft, cheesy, and so flavorful. Definitely making these again!
