Create the Caramel: In a separate saucepan over medium-high heat, combine 1/2 cup of granulated sugar with 2 tablespoons of water. Stir occasionally to dissolve the sugar completely. Once the mixture comes to a boil, refrain from stirring. Instead, gently swirl the pan to redistribute the sugar as it begins to caramelize. Monitor the color closely, cooking until it reaches a light golden-brown hue, approximately 310 degrees F (160 degrees C). Immediately pour the molten caramel into a 9x5-inch loaf pan and set aside to harden. (Time: 15-20 minutes)
