Follow The Directions

01

Step
8 mins

In a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan or Dutch oven, cook the diced bacon over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until crisp and golden brown (6-8 minutes). Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside, reserving the rendered bacon fat in the pan.

02

Step
5 mins

To the rendered bacon fat, add the white vinegar, granulated sugar, and brown sugar. Stir well to combine. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugars are dissolved.

03

Step
2 mins

Drain two cans of green beans and add them to the simmering vinegar mixture. Add the remaining two cans of undrained green beans, along with the reserved crispy bacon. Gently stir to combine all ingredients.

04

Step
20 mins

Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 20 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened and the flavors have melded together beautifully. Season with salt and pepper to taste before serving.

For a deeper smoky flavor, consider using smoked bacon.
Adjust the amount of sugar to your preference. Some may prefer a tangier dish, while others might like it sweeter.
If you don't have canned green beans, about 2 pounds of fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces, can be substituted. Blanch the fresh beans in boiling water for 3-4 minutes before adding them to the recipe.
This dish can be made ahead of time and reheated. The flavors actually develop further as it sits.
