Follow The Directions

01

Step

Prepare the Dough: Sift the flour into a large bowl. Add the beaten egg, lukewarm water, granulated sugar, melted lard (or shortening), and salt. Knead the mixture until a soft, smooth dough forms (approximately 8-10 minutes). Lightly brush the dough with about 1 tablespoon of the melted butter. Cover with a clean towel and let it rest at room temperature for at least 1 hour. (Rest time: 60 minutes)

02

Step

Make the Filling: In a medium bowl, combine the toasted bread crumbs with 3/4 cup of the melted butter. Stir in the ground walnuts, sliced apples, raisins, cinnamon, and granulated sugar. Mix well to ensure the apples are evenly coated. (Prep time: 15 minutes)

03

Step

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly butter a medium baking dish (approximately 9x13 inches). (Prep time: 5 minutes)

04

Step

Stretch and Assemble: Cover a large, clean work surface (like a table) with a tablecloth or cotton sheet and dust it generously with flour. Gently roll and stretch the rested dough into a very large, thin rectangle – it should be almost translucent, like tissue paper. Trim away any thick edges. Sprinkle the dough with about 1/2 cup of the remaining melted butter. Spread the bread crumb-apple mixture evenly across the dough, leaving a 2-inch border on all sides. Fold one end of the dough over the filling, then carefully roll the dough to form a strudel. Cut the strudel to fit your prepared baking dish. (Prep time: 30 minutes)

05

Step

Bake the Strudel: Carefully transfer the strudel to the prepared baking dish. Brush the top with the remaining melted butter. Bake in the preheated oven until the strudel is golden brown and the apples are tender, about 1 hour. (Bake time: 60 minutes)

06

Step

Cool and Serve: Let the strudel cool slightly before slicing and serving. Dust with powdered sugar, if desired, and serve warm.

For the best flavor, use a mix of apple varieties.
To prevent the dough from drying out while resting, make sure the towel is slightly damp.
If the dough tears while stretching, don't worry! Just patch it up with a little extra dough or brush with melted butter.
Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra-special treat.

I added a splash of Calvados to the apple filling for a little extra depth of flavor. Delicious!
