For a richer flavor, use heavy cream instead of milk. If you don't have Amaretto liqueur, almond extract can be used as a substitute, start with 1/2 teaspoon and add more to taste. Ensure constant stirring is necessary to prevent the filling from burning and sticking to the bottom of the pot. If lumps do form, strain the cooked filling through a fine-mesh sieve before chilling.
