Follow The Directions

01

Step

Place pork shoulder fat-side-up in a slow cooker. Cover with soda, garlic powder, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. (Prep time: 5 minutes)

02

Step

Cover and cook on Low until pork is tender and can be easily pulled apart with a fork, 8 to 10 hours. (Cook time: 8-10 hours)

03

Step

Remove any bones and solid hunks of fat from pork and discard. Shred with 2 forks; stir pork into its juices. Add brown sugar, green chiles, salsa verde, and habanero pepper. Season with salt and pepper. Stir well to combine. (Prep time: 15 minutes)

04

Step

Cover and cook on Low until flavors are absorbed, about 1 hour. (Cook time: 1 hour)

For a richer flavor, sear the pork shoulder on all sides in a hot skillet before adding it to the slow cooker.
Adjust the amount of habanero pepper to your spice preference. Remove the seeds for less heat.
If you don't have salsa verde, you can substitute with tomatillo salsa.
Serve with your favorite toppings: cilantro, chopped onion, lime wedges, and crumbled cotija cheese are all great options.
