Follow The Directions

01

Step

In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, half-and-half, eggs, 1 tablespoon of maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until thoroughly combined. (5 minutes)

02

Step

Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish. Arrange the French bread slices in a single layer in the dish, overlapping slightly if necessary. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread, ensuring all slices are moistened. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or preferably overnight. (10 minutes)

03

Step

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Remove the French toast bake from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 20-30 minutes while the oven preheats. (30 minutes)

04

Step

In a medium bowl, combine the brown sugar, pecans, softened butter, and 2 tablespoons of maple syrup. Mix with a fork or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle the pecan topping evenly over the French toast bake. (10 minutes)

05

Step

Bake, uncovered, in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the French toast is puffed, golden brown, and the topping is bubbly and caramelized. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out clean. (45 minutes)

06

Step

Let the French toast bake cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving. Serve warm, with additional maple syrup if desired.

For an extra layer of flavor, try adding a splash of bourbon or rum to the egg mixture.
If you don't have pecans, walnuts or almonds would also work well in the topping.
To make ahead, assemble the French toast bake and pecan topping, cover, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking. Add an extra 5-10 minutes to the baking time if baking directly from the refrigerator.
