Follow The Directions

01

Step

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the linguine and cook according to package directions, about 8-10 minutes, or until al dente. Reserve about 1/2 cup of pasta water before draining. (8-10 minutes)

02

Step

While the pasta is cooking, melt the butter in a large saute pan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and mushrooms and cook until the mushrooms are tender and have released their moisture, about 8-10 minutes. (13-15 minutes)

03

Step

Reduce the heat to low. Slowly stir in the heavy cream and bring to a gentle simmer. Cook until the sauce has thickened slightly, about 5 minutes. Stir in the julienned ham and basil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Simmer for another 2 minutes to heat the ham through. (7 minutes)

04

Step

Add the drained linguine to the sauce and toss to coat. If the sauce is too thick, add a little of the reserved pasta water until it reaches your desired consistency. (2 minutes)

05

Step

Serve immediately, garnished with grated Parmesan cheese, if desired.

For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding a splash of dry white wine to the pan after the mushrooms have cooked and allowing it to reduce before adding the cream.
If you don't have fresh basil, 1/2 teaspoon of dried basil can be substituted. Add it along with the cream.
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop, adding a splash of cream or milk if needed to loosen the sauce.
