Follow The Directions

01

Step
5 mins

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease two baking sheets. (5 minutes)

02

Step
10 mins

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour and baking powder. In a separate large bowl, cream together granulated sugar and softened butter until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time until well combined. (10 minutes)

03

Step
5 mins

Gradually stir in the flour mixture into the butter mixture, alternating with cocoa powder, until just combined. Mix in 2 tablespoons of orange liqueur and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract. (5 minutes)

04

Step
20 mins

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently, adding more flour if needed to prevent sticking. Roll dough into small logs (about 1-2 tablespoons each) and shape them into desired festive shapes. Place cookies onto the prepared baking sheets. (20 minutes)

05

Step
30 mins

Bake in preheated oven until edges are lightly browned, about 10-12 minutes. Let cool on baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. (30 minutes)

06

Step
20 mins

Prepare the icing: In a medium bowl, whisk together sifted confectioners' sugar, 2 tablespoons of orange liqueur, water, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract until smooth and creamy. Dip cooled cookies into the icing, allowing excess to drip off. Place iced cookies on a wire rack to set. Decorate with your favorite sprinkles, if desired. (20 minutes)

For a richer flavor, use dark cocoa powder.
Feel free to experiment with other extracts, such as almond or peppermint.
These cookies are best stored in an airtight container at room temperature.
The dough can be made ahead of time and chilled for up to 24 hours. Allow to come to room temperature slightly before rolling and shaping.

The icing is the perfect finishing touch. It's sweet, but not too sweet, and the orange flavor really shines through.
