Follow The Directions

01

Step
5 mins

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Place a wire rack inside a rimmed baking sheet. (5 minutes)

02

Step
15 mins

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the egg, oregano, and 1 tablespoon of water until well combined. Add the panko bread crumbs and ground beef to the mixture. Sprinkle half of the French onion soup mix over the beef mixture and thoroughly combine. Shape the mixture into evenly sized meatballs. Place the meatballs on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring they are spaced apart. (15 minutes)

03

Step
20 mins

Bake in the preheated oven until the meatballs are cooked through and lightly browned, approximately 20 minutes. Use a meat thermometer to ensure an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C). (20 minutes)

04

Step
15 mins

While the meatballs are baking, prepare the Gruyere cheese sauce. Add the remaining French onion soup mix to a saucepan over medium heat. Gradually whisk in 1/4 cup of water until well combined and allow the mixture to thicken slightly. Repeat this process, whisking in another 1/4 cup of water and allowing it to thicken each time, until all the water is used up. Stir in the heavy whipping cream and grated Gruyere cheese. Continue stirring until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth and creamy. (15 minutes)

05

Step
5 mins

Serve the French onion meatballs immediately with the Gruyere cheese sauce spooned generously over the top. Enjoy! (5 minutes)

For enhanced flavor, consider browning the meatballs in a skillet before baking. This adds a rich, caramelized crust.
If Gruyere cheese is unavailable, Swiss cheese can be used as a substitute.
Adjust the amount of French onion soup mix to your preference for a more or less intense onion flavor.
The sauce can be made ahead of time and reheated gently before serving.
