For a richer flavor, use brown sugar instead of white sugar. A squeeze of lemon juice over the apples will prevent them from browning and add a nice tang. Feel free to add a handful of chopped pecans or walnuts for added texture. This dish can be prepared a day ahead of time and baked just before serving. Add 10-15 minutes to the baking time if baking from cold.
